Barcelona offer update emerges in West Ham United race to sign Kalvin Phillips
West Ham made a better offer than Barcelona to Manchester City for Kalvin Phillips’ wages, according to a report in the Independent.
The news outlet reported on 24 January that the 28-year-old was high on Xavi’s list but City were not impressed by their offer.
Eventually, when the Hammers came calling, the England international was on his way to join them on loan until the end of the season.
Good bit of business?
Signing him on loan and not a permanent transfer gives the Hammers much-needed time to decide whether or not he’ll be a good long-term fit.
Phillips looked among the best midfielders in the Premier League when Leeds United got promoted but then had a serious injury.
Manchester City still decided to secure his services and at the time, he looked the ideal midfielder for Pep Guardiola’s system.
However, he has demanded more time and again from the England international and he’s just not been able to live up to the Spaniard’s expectations.

David Moyes does not prioritise possession as much as Guardiola and the pressure and competition at the London Stadium is nothing like it is at the Etihad where they’re expected to fight for every competition.
Hopefully, the move south gets his career back on track and if he impresses, he may even join West Ham permanently in the summer.
