Angelo Ogbonna reacts to Italy European Championship victory after snub
Angelo Ogbonna failed to make Italy’s European Championship squad despite an impressive campaign with West Ham.
The 33-year-old last featured for the Azzurri in 2016 and was tipped to make Roberto Mancini’s squad.
While that did not happen, with Ogbonna making his feelings known by insisting that the Italy manager did not select the team based on merit [Corriere della Sera (via GFNI)], the Hammers ace has put his grudge aside to send his congratulations to the team on his personal Instagram account.
Fair play Ogbonna
The West Ham rock featured in 28 Premier League games last term and scored thrice as we finished sixth in the table, and he definitely deserved to have made the Azzurri squad.
While Ogbonna would not have had a chance of breaking into the starting XI due to the brilliant centre-back partnership of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, a spot in the team would have been a fair reward for guiding the Hammers to the Europa League.
Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri made the squad despite only making two Premier League appearances for the Blues last term – with both coming off the bench – and we believe that would have particularly hurt the West Ham ace.
Nevertheless, he has the chance to return to the team ahead of next summer’s World Cup, and we know he would be giving it his all during the 2021-22 campaign.
Playing in Europe would help boost his chances too, and Ogbonna would be looking forward to impressing with David Moyes’ side once again.
He is one of the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League, and he deserves to be playing for Italy.
