Andy Townsend slams ‘wasteful’ West Ham United after Aston Villa defeat

Andy Townsend has slammed West Ham for their wasteful display in the 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa on 22 October, claiming they were well beaten by the hosts on the day.

The talkSPORT host claimed the Hammers got themselves into some good situations and had opportunities to test Emiliano Martinez in goal, but were poor with their decision-making throughout.

He also commented on David Moyes’ criticism of the refereeing performance, claiming the boss does not mince his words while Ally McCoist laughed at the harshness of Moyes’ words.

Townsend was speaking live on talkSPORT [23 October, 07:52], when he said: “I mean listen, Moysey doesn’t normally dress it up, he obviously feels particularly aggrieved, but in the end, they were well beaten.

“I watched most of that game yesterday Ally, and I thought West Ham were really wasteful when they got into some good situations, good opportunities to maybe work Martinez better.

“I thought they were poor. I thought they were poor in the last third with their crossing, shooting, final delivery, the final ball was non-existent, really.”

A poor display against a good team

It was a perfect storm as far as Aston Villa were concerned at the weekend. A poor display from the Hammers matched up with a Villa side who are performing out of their skin, particularly at Villa Park, and the final score made grim reading for West Ham fans.

As Townsend says, the Hammers were wasteful in attack and failed to cause problems for the opposition goalkeeper. Even Jarrod Bowen’s goal was a pot-shot which looked unlikely to pose much threat before a heavy deflection saw it roll into the opposite corner.

David Moyes will be hoping this is a blip as far as the result is concerned after an impressive start to the season saw his side rise up the table, but ultimately Aston Villa were just the better side on the day.

There is no cause for concern yet for the Hammers, who will need to regroup ahead of the Europa League trip to Greece when they face Olympiacos on Thursday 26 October.

In other West Ham news, a transfer move for the Hammers is now off the table.
