Ally McCoist reacts to West Ham fan controversy v Arsenal

Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist have discussed live on air about West Ham fans leaving London Stadium early during the 6-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday 11 February.

With the Hammers recording their seventh match without a victory, last winning against the Gunners in December, the frustration around the ground is understandable.

McCoist is very understanding of the situation but admits that walking out could be a waste of a ticket for those wanting to watch their team.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (12 February, 6:23am), he said: “Fans have the right to leave whenever they want. However, I do understand that people would want to pay money for that ticket.

Townsend added: “I’m interested to know whether fans of the same team are turning round, saying ‘Come on. Stay, don’t go, don’t go. We need to stick with them,’ but I’m not sure what the response would be.”

West Ham walkout at half-time

As Leandro Trossard curled yet another goal home in the first half at London Stadium, making it 4-0 to the Gunners before the whistle finally blew, it is more than understandable to see fans up and leave.

The Hammers have experienced thrashings on more than one occasion this season already, losing 5-1 to Liverpool in the EFL Cup and a 5-0 defeat to Fulham. This was different, though.

It seemed as though the players had lost hope in David Moyes and were no longer playing for him, showing no effort and allowing Arsenal to slice through them with ease.

Former Hammer Declan Rice scoring Arsenal’s sixth just after the hour-mark will have been icing on the cake, and even though his celebrations were subdued, that would be enough for any fan to call it a day.

The ticket could have gone to someone else, as McCoist suggested, but the likelihood is that whoever replaced that fan would have also walked out at 6-0 down.
