Ally McCoist shares remarkable West Ham United possibility live on talkSPORT in Premier League

Ally McCoist believes that a West Ham United victory against Newcastle at the London Stadium could mark a “remarkable turnaround” for David Moyes’ side.

The Hammers host Eddie Howe’s Champions League-chasing outfit on Wednesday evening (5 April) after picking up a crucial 1-0 win over Southampton last weekend.

The win over the club’s direct relegation rivals helped propel David Moyes’ side out of the Premier League relegation zone and to within three points of Crystal Palace in 12th position.

Speaking live on talkSPORT Breakfast (5 April, 8:41), McCoist admitted that a second consecutive Premier League victory would cap off a terrific turnaround considering the 12th-placed position that is now up for grabs.

“If they can follow it up with another victory, believe it or not, I think they would go up to 12th position,” he said.

“It would be a remarkable turnaround.”

Fine margins

The tightly packed nature of the Premier League relegation fight right now means clubs are climbing up and down the table like their playing a game of Snakes and Ladders.

It is remarkable that West Ham United were 19th on Sunday morning but could rise as high as 12th with a win over the Magpies tonight.

The midweek encounter isn’t going to be plain sailing though, with Newcastle in scintillating form during their 2-0 win against Manchester United at the weekend.

Considering the Tyneside club’s remarkable defensive record this season – that has seen them record a Premier League-high 13 clean sheets – and West Ham’s somewhat stuttering attack, it could be a tough test to break down the visitors.

At times against Southampton, Danny Ings was isolated and ineffective as the club’s sole striker.

Moyes must figure out a way of getting more bodies forwards, more often, in order to bring the £15million January signing into the game against Newcastle.

Do that, and the remarkable turnaround McCoist highlighted could be on the cards.
