Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling share West Ham verdict after Antonio incident

Jeff Stelling believes the Michail Antonio incident will have a “galvanising effect” on West Ham United ahead of their Premier League clash against Wolves on Monday.

The Hammers confirmed via X on Sunday (8 December) that the Jamaica international had undergone surgery due to the injuries he sustained in a car crash.

West Ham shared their thanks for the many messages of support their striker received after the news was initially announced on 7 December.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (9 December, 07:24am), Stelling and Ally McCoist shared their thoughts on the Hammers’ situation.

“You just hope it can bring them together,” McCoist said. “As terrible of a situation as it is, you wouldn’t wish it on anybody at any time.

“You don’t know, it might carry the dressing room because clearly before the game tonight, they’ll have Michail Antonio in their thoughts and they’ll mention him and it could just bring them together.

“It’s tough times for both teams tonight but that whole thing puts everything into perspective that does.”

Stelling replied: “I think it will have a galvanising effect on the West Ham players, they’ll want to perform at the highest level as a tribute to the man who’s lying in a hospital bed who should be out there leading the line.”

West Ham United provide good Michail Antonio news

When the incident was first reported, there was rightfully a lot of worry from the footballing world with all the concern being placed upon the Jamaica international and his family.

The Hammers have kept everyone informed of the situation and the updates have been promising, with West Ham no doubt thinking of ways to support their player through this tough period.

One of the nicest things to have emerged from the terrible situation is the outpouring of love and support from ex-players, teammates, pundits and fans.

Ian Holloway is among those to have sent his best wishes to Antonio with everyone hoping he can get back to full health as soon as possible.

He’s a West Ham legend, and hopefully, the surgery he’s undergone will set things right and help him on his way to making a full recovery.

The Hammers are set to face Wolves in what looks to be a pivotal game for both Julen Lopetegui and Gary O’Neil on 9 December but the Hammers will now have some extra motivation to win and do their striker proud.

In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui is surely kidding himself after what Guillem Balgue admitted about his verdict on the Hammers’ future.
