Arne Slot has ruled Alisson out of contention to feature as West Ham face Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday (25 September).

The Reds were without the 31-year-old shot-stopper during their 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday 21 September, with Caoimhin Kelleher stepping in between the sticks.

The Hammers have not beaten Liverpool since a 3-2 victory at the London Stadium in 2021, a game in which Alisson actually opened the scoring for the Irons through an own goal.

Speaking in a press conference, quoted by Fabrizio Romano [24 September], Slot said on Alisson's injury: "We are looking at the weekend versus Wolves but it's going to be tight. He will not be there tomorrow versus West Ham."

While Alisson missing is a huge blow for Slot's men, it is hardly a boost for the Hammers, who will just have to face Kelleher instead.

The 25-year-old has been tipped as one of the best back-up keepers in the division, having attempted to strike a loan deal during the summer in search of more valuable game time.

It could possibly weaken Liverpool's backline slightly, with few goalies able to fill Alisson's shoes, but the Hammers have been known to hurt the Reds before.

While their last victory came in 2021, the Hammers have only not been able to score twice in the last six meetings, with Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio scoring in a 2-2 draw last time out.

Now under the leadership of Julen Lopetegui, who is attempting to implement a much more attacking style of play, the London club could do some real damage in the EFL Cup.

However, the new head coach must prove himself after a tough start to the Premier League campaign, winning just once in five matches. A win against Liverpool would send out a huge message.
