Alan Shearer names ‘outstanding’ West Ham United ace Michail Antonio in Team of the Week

Pundit Alan Shearer has named West Ham United striker Michail Antonio in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The Jamaican international scored his club’s third and final goal as they defeated Brighton 3-1 on Saturday (26 August).

Summer signing James Ward-Prowse netted his first West Ham goal in the win, with Jarrod Bowen also on the scoresheet.

Pascal Gross netted a late consolation goal for the hosts against the Hammers, who are unbeaten from their first three matches of the new campaign.

Shearer named Antonio in his Team of the Week following his display, writing for the official Premier League website (28 August): “Bullied Brighton’s defence all match and scored another outstanding goal.”

Superb strike

It really was a superb goal from Antonio, who wrapped up all three points for his club on their trip to the south coast. It followed his well-taken goal against Chelsea, who West Ham defeated 3-1 at the London Stadium after their opening day 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

The seven points from three matches leaves the East London club sitting second in the Premier League table, behind Manchester City, who have won all three of their games.

Antonio hasn’t always been a regular goalscorer, and has played in many different positions in his time in claret and blue.

But he is leading the line expertly in these early stages, holding the ball up and brining his fellow attackers into play, as well as taking some of the glory for himself.

The striker had plenty to do when he received the ball just before his goal, with Antonio turning smartly before firing the ball into the back of the net.

In other West Ham news, a late summer approach has been made for a big-name Hammers player.
