Alan Nixon shares West Ham United update on Scott McTominay ahead of January window

The moment has passed for West Ham United to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United this season, according to Alan Nixon.

David Moyes’ side was repeatedly linked with a move for the Scottish midfielder during the summer transfer window and reportedly even submitted a £40million bid for the Scotsman [Sacha Tavolieri, 6 August].

McTominay has remained a rotation option at Old Trafford this season and while his performances have impressed some still are tipping him for a January exit.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (29 December) he said: “Moment passed. West Ham signed superbly last window.”

Moment has passed

Having lost Declan Rice last summer, a move for McTominay made perfect sense during the last transfer window as the Scottish international represented the perfect replacement for the England international at the hearty of midfield.

However, the superb business completed in the summer to bring the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez to the London Stadium has meant that the Irons don’t have to add any more quality in the middle of the park this January.

Other areas of the pitch require more work than the midfield in Moyes’ squad, with a lack of options in the number nine position. Jarrod Bowen has impressed centrally this season but he is not a natural number nine and should West Ham have money to spend they should spend it there.

On top of that, some inconsistent performances from the Irons’ backline could see the Hammers look to add a couple of bodies to their defence before they even consider signing more midfielders.

It will be interesting to see how much money Moyes spends when the transfer window opens in the new year and where he thinks he needs to recruit, however, it seems as though the chances of McTominay making the switch to the London Stadium have fallen to zero.
