Alan Brazil and Dean Saunders slam West Ham United after what they have seen

Dean Saunders believes that Julen Lopetegui’s new tactics at West Ham United are “confusing”.

The Hammers have been one of the biggest underachievers in the Premier League this term despite having a fairly strong transfer window.

Lopetegui’s men are fourteenth in the Premier League and Alan Brazil couldn’t believe how poor they were in the 3-0 defeat against Chelsea on 21 September.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (25 September, 6:45 am), Saunders and Brazil shared their verdicts after what they have seen from the new-look squad at the London Stadium.

“How poor were West Ham the other day,” Brazil said.

Saunders replied after spotting something this week: “They’re trying to get the new manager’s message across and it’s just a bit confusing for them.

“Some of them are pressing, some of them aren’t, their back four is dropping off, some are stepping up”.

West Ham United need to get back to winning ways

Lopetegui was brought in to try and improve the Hammers’ results and perhaps even gain European qualification by the end of the 2024/25 season.

However, things haven’t gone quite to plan for the club and the Spaniard already seems to have been given a three-game ultimatum to decide his future [GiveMeSport, 24 September].

While it still seems a little premature to be thinking of sacking the former Wolves boss, it’s not a surprise to see Hammers fans complaining about the style of football the club is playing.

Alongside his tactics, Lopetegui seems adamant to continue starting Konstantinos Mavropanos over £34million ace Jean Clair-Todibo which to those on the outside, makes little sense [Florian Plettenberg, 9 August].

There is plenty of time for things to change throughout the season but for now, the club just needs to get themselves back on track otherwise things could get quite hairy.

Their next game is against Liverpool in the EFL Cup which will once again be another major test of the Hammers’ resilience as it’s hard to see how they’d get anything from the game on their current form.
