Aaron Cresswell wowed by what West Ham United fans did in 5-0 win v Freiburg

Aaron Cresswell has admitted the West Ham fans were “tremendous” in the Europa League victory over Freiburg on Thursday (14 March).

In an interview on the Hammers’ website on Saturday (16 March), the 34-year-old said he really enjoyed the game and that he was delighted to help the team, having scored in the 5-0 win against the Bundesliga side in what was a rare start for him.

The English left-back added that the Irons nullified the threats posed by the German club and could have scored more after creating a number of chances at the London Stadium.

“I enjoyed that – it was a big game and I’m delighted to help the team,” said Cresswell. “It was a great performance and result, so it was a perfect night all round. We’ve had big European nights before – the one that sticks out is Sevilla – it kind of felt like that going into the game 1-0 down.

“I felt the crowd were tremendous straight from the off. The performance from the start was brilliant, I thought we had the press spot on. We nullified them and created a few chances, and we could have scored more.

“From everyone who came on to the pitch – the starting XI and everyone involved was brilliant. It was a great night, and we’ve managed to make it three quarter-finals in three years.”

Aaron Cresswell made case for more West Ham minutes

It was certainly a good performance from Cresswell as he took his opportunity in the first team with both hands after Emerson missed the game against Freiburg.

It was a superb finish from the left-back and, despite picking up a yellow card for a late foul, he was largely solid in what was an excellent defensive performance.

He made a case to receive more minutes in the side over the next couple of months, potentially allowing Emerson a few breathers as we look to advance into the latter stages of the Europa League.

It’s been a difficult season for the Englishman after he’s spent the majority of the campaign on the bench, but there is a chance that could now change.

It still seems likely the veteran could move on this summer, but he will be feeling an awful lot better after his performance against the Bundesliga side at the London Stadium.

In other West Ham news, sources have claimed a Premier League manager is now in the frame to replace Moyes.
