Tony Gale fumes over West Ham defending in Premier League clash v Aston Villa

Tony Gale was left fuming at the West Ham defending after they conceded early on to an Ollie Watkins goal against Aston Villa on Sunday, 12 March.

Watkins’ goal was soon cancelled out by the Hammers, with Said Benrahma converting a thunderous penalty at the London Stadium. Nevertheless, West Ham’s defensive frailties were on full display yet again.

Gale confessed that the West Ham defence slacked off for the Watkins goal and questioned their defending in the incident.

West Ham

“Great cross, great header but you have to question the marking,” said Gale live on the USA network (12 March, 14:21 PM).

“It’s all been a little bit lax, hasn’t it? The first time it comes in, defenders fall asleep and a quality striker like Watkins. He hurts you.”

West Ham

Mixed bag.

The Hammers dominated the possession early on in the game, which amounted to nothing as Watkins headed home after the Villans’ first attack of the game.

Benrahma hit back shortly after, however, the Hammers faithful will be left craving more when the teams come out for the second half of play.

Jarrod Bowen was a standout in the first 45 for West Ham, with his menacing and pacey runs causing a few problems for Villa at the back.

Nevertheless, despite the game being level-pegging, there was a nervous atmosphere around the London Stadium with the club currently sitting 18th in the league.

Nothing short of three points is needed by the end of play today, with teams in and around the Irons all gaining points on the 11 March.

Fans will have their fingers crossed that they are in for a massive second half from Moyes and co, or the dreaded drop will become more of a reality.
