‘Proper old school’ – West Ham Super Fans name MOTM in 1-0 win v Burnley

This is part of a regular series from our panel of West Ham Super Fans. Each week, our Super Fans will deliver their verdicts on the biggest talking points and news stories around the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio’s early goal earned West Ham a 1-0 win against Burnley at the London Stadium on Saturday.

David Moyes’ men avoided defeat for a fourth Premier League match in a row by beating a team who’s won against them in each of their last three meetings before this weekend.

It was a solid performance by the Irons, who were missing Fabian Balbuena due to him coming in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Balbuena’s absence meant that Craig Dawson was handed his third consecutive Premier League start for the Hammers and he definitely impressed.

We asked our panel of West Ham Super Fans to choose their man of the match for the win over Burnley and the majority of them went for the former West Brom and Watford man.

Here is what they had to say:

Dawson was an absolute rock in the heart of the West Ham defence on Saturday.

According to stats by Wyscout, he won all three of his defensive duels and three of his five aerial duels.

The former England youth international also made seven interceptions, 13 recoveries and four clearances as the Irons kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

There were a lot of doubts about Dawson when he arrived at the London Stadium because he’d suffered relegation with both West Brom and Watford in his last two Premier League seasons.

But now, he looks like he’s someone who could help the Hammers defend a top-half finish in the league.

Dawson wasn’t the only player to impress our Super Fans though with Angelo Ogbonna, Declan Rice and goalscorer Antonio getting mentioned.

Ogbonna has been solid all season while Rice is just one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League – of course he’s going to be a man of the match contender in almost all his games.

It was great to see Antonio back on the scoresheet too.

Let’s hope the Irons can play this well against West Brom on Tuesday because Sam Allardyce’s men were in top form as they beat Wolves on Saturday.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are eyeing up Marseille’s Morgan Sanson.
