Tony Cottee shares major West Ham United fear ahead of Liverpool clash

Tony Cottee admits he is “fearing the worst” for West Ham United ahead of the clash against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Hammers will host the Premier League leaders at the London Stadium (29 December) and will be tasked with dealing with leading goal scorer and assist maker Mohamed Salah.

While Julen Lopetegui is heading into the contest fresh off a 1-0 win against Southampton on Boxing Day, former West Ham favourite Cottee shared his concern for his former employers via X (29 December).

He said: “Fearing the worst today… would love to nick a draw but it’s hard to see it against a very good Liverpool team… Look forward to seeing some of you at the London Stadium later today! COYI”.

With five points gained from the nine available, Lopetegui will remain at the helm heading into the New Year and has eased some of the growing pressure on his shoulders heading into the clash on Sunday.

Liverpool are the only Premier League side to remain unbeaten away from home, and Arne Slot will be eager to pull further away from Chelsea in the title race in the capital.

However, the Irons have the quality to hurt the visitors and will lean heavily on captain Jarrod Bowen alongside exit-linked Mohammed Kudus to cause the opposition problems.

The Reds have developed a habit of conceding the first goal before turning the deficit around on the way to victory. Should West Ham find themselves a goal to the good at the London Stadium, the match will fall perfectly into their hands.

Lopetegui has been scrutinised for his brand of defensive football this year, but should the final whistle blow with the Irons holding on for dear life, the supporters will finally be relieved to see the boss stick to his principles.
