Jacob Steinberg has told Tim Steidten he has "questions to answer" after West Ham United's defeat to Chelsea.

The Hammers' winless run at the London Stadium in the Premier League continued with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to the Blues on Saturday (21 September) as both Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer got on the scoresheet.

While most pundits and supporters were quick to slam Julen Lopetegui for his team selection and tactical setup, Guardian journalist Steinberg believes some of the blame has to lay with Irons chief Steidten.

Writing on X on Saturday (21 September) he said: "Meanwhile serious concerns about recruitment over the past two summers.

"A series of iffy signings, most with no resale value. Steidten also has questions to answer.

"[Konstantinos] Mavrapanos, for example, is a mistake a game. Yet to sort out the striker."

What does Tim Steidten do for West Ham at the London Stadium?

Of course, the natural reaction after a defeat is to criticise the manager for his selection and while Lopetegui did get plenty wrong against Chelsea, it would be naive to suggest that the loss was entirely his fault.

Both the players and Steidten have to shoulder some of the burden as well. To a man, the squad left a lot to be desired at the London Stadium on Saturday and they let both their manager and supporters down with their display.

Steidten has played a major role in building this squad in East London over the last few years and while it is early days, it does feel as though the German may have made one or two mistakes in the transfer market.

Guido Rodriguez hasn't looked at the pace of the Premier League, Mavropanos has made mistake after mistake, Niclas Fullkrug hasn't even managed a league start and Lopetegui doesn't appear to trust Crysencio Summerville.

Until results at the London Stadium improve, everyone involved at West Ham will be under pressure whether that be the manager, technical director or the players.
