Sam Matterface spots something ‘weird’ in West Ham loss vs Brentford, nobody else would’ve noticed

West Ham could not end their barren run in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Monday night.

Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen scored as West Ham lost 2-0 to Brentford, continuing their dismal start to the Premier League season.

The Hammers were bettered throughout the game, and were lucky not to concede more on yet another terrible day at the London Stadium.

Nuno made several changes to his West Ham line-up against Brentford, with the Portuguese coach hoping to spur a reaction from his team.

The Premier League announced that there would be no semi-automated offside against Brentford, and the change ultimately worked in the Hammers’ favour, when Thiago’s second was disallowed.

Sam Matterface picks out ‘strange’ kit decision

West Ham were already faced with an unhappy stadium, with hundreds of fans choosing against attending the London Stadium.

Unfilled seats could be seen throughout the stands, with no big welcome for Nuno in his first home match in charge of the Hammers.

And the first half only worked to further dampen the mood in East London. West Ham were peppered with shots, failing time and time again to deal with countless Brentford corners and crosses.

The breakthrough for the visitors came when Kevin Schade ghosted through the Hammers backline to receive a long pass, laying off for Thiago, who found the net despite the efforts of Alphonse Areola.

There was little difference in the second half, with West Ham conceding the second in the final seconds and ultimately limping to another disappointing loss.

Commentating live on the game, Sam Matterface picked out a slightly different talking point, however.

It’s always strange seeing a team play in light blue with dabs of claret, especially against West Ham. Weird,” the commentator said live on talkSPORT.

What do the rules say about kit clashes?

To call Brentford’s away kit a clash with West Ham’s home would be a bit too far. But the two kits certainly share a colour, which would appear to go against the Football Association’s rules.

The FA state that the two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and the match officials.

On the face of it, Brentford’s away kit would appear not exactly to do that. Ultimately, though, kit quirks are by the wayside for West Ham.

Home kit or away kit, the Hammers are in desperate need of the colour green in their results column.
