Revealed: What West Ham United fans sung about Darwin Nunez in first half v Liverpool

West Ham fans jeered Darwin Nunez throughout the first half of their EFL Cup tie on Wednesday night as his substandard display did not go unnoticed.

The Liverpool striker was caught offside on multiple occasions as he attempted to catch the Hammers backline sleeping, while also giving away a couple of fouls for handball.

BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone reported on Twitter that West Ham fans were calling Nunez a worse version of former Hammers striker Andy Carroll, who played over a century of games at the London Stadium.

Not a million miles away

West Ham fans know from first-hand experience how a poor striker can hinder a performance on the pitch, with the London club famous for their lack of clinical forwards over the years.

The Hammers have not seen a 20-goals-a-season striker at the club since Marlon Harewood during the 2004/05 season. Carroll was just another player on a long list of failures at the club, despite nearly 150 appearances and 34 goals in seven years with West Ham, across two spells.

Fans will always remember his bicycle-kick goal against Crystal Palace. He could be one of the best strikers in the league on his day and is still a beloved figure in East London, but inconsistency is what slowly killed his career.

It is pretty funny to hear Nunez compared to him. But with the sloppy nature of his play, poor first touch, but vicious shot at goal, the comparison is not as outrageous as you may think at first.

His lanky stature and hair tied in a man-bun continue the trend between the two strikers. However, it may be slightly unfair to the current Liverpool man, as his ceiling for development is incredibly high, being just 24 years of age.
