Premier League make announcement on incident in West Ham vs Liverpool game

West Ham fell to a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, in a match that had plenty of controversies.

While Liverpool were favourites at the London Stadium, Hammers fans had plenty of hope they could pull off a surprise given Arne Slot’s recent misfortunes at Anfield.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side struggled to have any impact on the match and were ultimately undone.

Many West Ham players were dreadful, but none as bad as Lucas Paqueta, who was controversially sent off late on.

Lucas Paqueta sent off for dissent against Liverpool

Paqueta had only just come back from a suspension at West Ham, but his place in the starting XI will be short-lived.

Late on against Liverpool, the Brazilian international, clearly upset about Darren England’s decision to award Liverpool a free-kick, quickly confronted the referee.

As a result, the midfielder received a yellow card for his actions. However, did not walk away after the booking and was then given a second yellow card and his marching orders.

Now, the Premier League match centre on X on 30 November has confirmed that both of these yellow cards were awarded for dissent.

As a result, Paqueta will now be awarded a one-match ban and be suspended for West Ham’s upcoming match against Manchester United on Thursday.

What Nuno Espirito Santo has said about Paqueta’s sending off

Understandably, the red card left a poor taste in many fans’ mouths.

The Hammers were still in the game before the sending off, being only 1-0 down.

Yet, Paqueta’s action essentially ensured a defeat for the hosts, with Cody Gakpo netting Liverpool’s second in added time.

Now, speaking to BBC Sport on 30 November, Nuno has given his take on the red card.

He said: “Allow me to speak with Lucas first and try to understand why.

“Even with one man less the boys had a bit of fight. The spirit and the desire was there in a day that was very sad for us as a club.

“The passing of Billy Bonds affected everybody and we wanted to change the atmosphere with our actions.

“The boys gave it a fight so let’s keep on going.”
