Premier League make announcement after Chelsea v West Ham controversy

West Ham United’s controversial moment against Chelsea as the hosts equalised at Stamford Bridge has provoked a statement from the Premier League.

The Premier League posted via their Match Centre on X (3 February) to clear up why there was no offside against Marc Guiu during the build-up to Pedro Neto’s leveller in the second half (Sky Sports Football, 3 February).

The Hammers went on to lose 2-1 across London having led at the break, and are forced to lick their wounds after the controversy.

The Premier League stated: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as there was no factual evidence that Guiu made contact with the ball in the build-up, therefore there was no offside offence.”

The Irons will feel hard done by but will still be keeping tabs on the last knockings of the transfer window.

West Ham United deflated by VAR controversy v Chelsea

West Ham have a right to feel aggrieved, as it is clear Guiu – in an offside position – did get contact with his head to the ball before Neto tucked away the finish.

Afterwards the bad luck became worse, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s desperate attempt to block Cole Palmer’s cross looped over Alphonse Areola.

One bright spark on the night came via the return of Jarrod Bowen, who appeared for the first time since his December injury against Liverpool and he wasted no time in making a huge impact with the opener.

Potter will head back to East London frustrated from his trip back to his old club, but can take plenty of positives from a game that some months ago could have seen the Irons on the end of a thrashing.

The head coach and his team will regroup, reassess over the weekend break and look to set up well for this summer.
