Owen & Lawrenson agree on result of West Ham v Liverpool clash as battle for Europe heats up

Mark Lawrenson and Michael Owen believe West Ham will see their run of six consecutive wins come to an end on Sunday when they host the champions.

The former Liverpool players both predict their former club to hand West Ham their first defeat of 2021, both suggesting it’ll be a tight encounter.

Whilst giving his weekly predictions for the BBC, Lawrenson said he saw signs of improvement for the Reds despite being knocked out of the FA Cup.

“I know Liverpool went out of the FA Cup against Manchester United last weekend but I saw some signs of improvement from them, especially in attack, and there was more of the same in Thursday’s win over Tottenham,” Lawrenson said.

“This is a tough test for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but it is the sort of game they will win if they maintain their current form.”

Lawrenson predicts the score will be 2-1 to the Reds.

“Owen, speaking to BetVictor Blog, said he thinks it’ll be a game of few goals.

“Liverpool returned to winning ways with a controlled away victory at Tottenham on Thursday night. Again, the Reds travel to London to take on a West Ham side that are absolutely flying.

“The Hammers have won their last 4 on the bounce and are undefeated in their last 6 Premier League matches. So, the home side will absolutely fancy their chances here.

“I think this could be tight. Liverpool will look to dominate possession, and I think one goal may be enough to clinch the points for the Reds.”

Owen thinks it will be 1-0 to Liverpool.

Season of surprises

Sunday’s fixture will be number 21 of the season for David Moyes squad. Three points would take us back to fourth place and leapfrog our opponents in the process.

In a season that’s thrown up so many surprises to Hammers fans, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be confident going into this fixture.

Moyes’ side can play for the remainder of the season with absolutely no pressure on them. Hopefully, our squad can enjoy the occasion and get all three points.

Despite their recent run, Liverpool aren’t to be taken lightly. Jurgen Klopp’s men were the runaway title winners last season and have some world-class talent in their squad.

But there’s just something about this West Ham side that makes you think we can keep winning.

That’s not something we’ve been used to saying!
