Mohammed Kudus stars, Max Kilman stinks – West Ham United player ratings v Manchester City

West Ham were condemned to their second Premier League defeat of the season after losing 3-1 to Manchester City on Saturday (31 August).

Erling Haaland opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, with the Hammers replying just nine minutes later through a Ruben Dias own goal, though Julen Lopetegui’s men were unable to hold on.

The Man City striker completed his hat-trick at the London Stadium, though the new manager will have seen plenty of positives from the defeat.

West Ham Zone rated each player out of 10.

Alphonse Areola (Off for Fabianski 46′) – 5

Made a couple of superb saves to keep his side in the match but was subbed off at half-time, likely due to an injury sustained during the first 45 minutes.

Emerson (Off for Coufal 71′) – 5

Struggled to keep track of Man City’s forward line, being criticised for Haaland’s second goal of his hat-trick. Replaced with 20 minutes remaining.

Max Kilman – 4

Picked up a needless yellow card during the second half but did well to stand up against Haaland on several occasions. Difficult to given a higher rating when three goals have been conceded.

Konstantinos Mavropanos – 5

Accurate and assured in his passing out from the back, winning all necessary duels, especially in the air, but his efforts were not enough to keep out Haaland.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7

Some incredibly exciting signs down the right flank. The former Manchester United man has linked up brilliantly with Jarrod Bowen and looks to be some of the best summer business in the Premier League.

Guido Rodriguez – 4

Struggled during his third Premier League start, picking up a yellow card in the middle of the park. Was in Edson Alvarez’s shadow for much of the match but still looks to be a decent signing for this season.

Edson Alvarez (Off for Soucek 77′) – 5

Just like Rodriguez, Alvarez struggled to stamp his mark in the middle of the park, even though Man City did not have Rodri at their disposal. Taken off for rest rather than risk another injury.

Lucas Paqueta – 5

One of his quieter performances in a West Ham shirt. Remained comfortable on the ball, winning his duels and making himself a nuisance but could not have a telling impact for the Hammers.

Mohammed Kudus – 8

A major threat at the London Stadium, pushing City’s defence further back with his incredible pace. Unlucky to smack the post with one of his efforts.

Michail Antonio (Off for Niclas Fullkrug 71′)- 4

Made several bursts into the penalty area but was invisible for much of the match. Could not hold the ball up enough for his teammates, so the ball normally went long, overlooking the striker in attack.

Jarrod Bowen (Off for Crysencio Summerville 86′) – 7

Had some of the best chances to take at least a point against Man City, putting a decent cross across the box before Ruben Dias’ own goal.
