Mike Dean reacts to West Ham United v Brighton incident live on air

Mike Dean joked it was the season of goodwill as Brighton opened the scoring against West Ham on Saturday.

VAR checked for offside and a potential foul on Lukasz Fabianski as Mats Wieffer volleyed home at the London Stadium on 21 December.

Dean reacted as the goal was given, with Mohammed Kudus hitting back minutes later to secure yet another 1-1 draw.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday [21 December, 16:14], Dean said: “It is onside.

“I think they are checking now for a possible foul on the goalkeeper and obviously that’s been cleared as well, I think.

“Goal given – the season of goodwill and all that.”

Julen Lopetegui will not have been happy with how easily his side conceded given his job is not exactly secure at the London Stadium.

With Jarrod Bowen and Kudus in his squad though, they were able to hit back quickly to find the equaliser.

Fabianski was sensational last time out at Bournemouth, but he will not be happy that he wasn’t strong enough in this challenge with Lewis Dunk at the back.

The Hammers were the beneficiaries of VAR against the Cherries in that 1-1 draw, with Tyler Adams being punished for a handball, but it couldn’t save them here.

Brighton haven’t exactly been in good form recently, so it was a missed opportunity to jump further up the Premier League table yet again.

There can be no excuses though and the officiating cannot be used every single week when the standard of performance is not good enough for the entire 90 minutes.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have opened discussions to finalise a pre-agreed permanent transfer.
