Mike Dean reacts to West Ham United v Brentford controversy live on Sky Sports

Mike Dean has reacted to a penalty appeal from Brentford that was waved away against West Ham on Saturday 28 September.

The Hammers have another point on the board under Julen Lopetegui but were largely uninspiring in the 1-1 draw at the GTECH Community Stadium.

Tomas Soucek levelled the scores after Bryan Mbeumo scored after just 38 seconds, but the result could have been so different if a potential penalty was awarded to the Bees.

Speaking on Sky Sports News [28 September, 16:53] former referee Dean suggested that the officials got the decision right to not award a spot kick.

He said: “Janelt has gone to have a shot, a player has come in behind him and put his foot in front of him and he’s kicked the back of his foot and then he’s stubbed his toe on the floor.

“So for me, correct decision on field and VAR has agreed with the referee’s decision.”

West Ham avoid late defeat against Brentford

It has to be said that the decision was arguably the correct one from Simon Hooper but that didn’t stop the Irons fans from sitting a bit more uncomfortably while awaiting a decision.

It certainly would have been another frustrating moment for Lopetegui who has had a tough time of it since replacing David Moyes.

There is no doubt that the Spaniard’s side arguably deserved more from the clash in West London but couldn’t carve out many clear-cut chances.

This may not have been helped by the eye-catching decision to hook Mohammed Kudus at halftime before taking Lucas Paqueta off later in the second 45.

The duo haven’t properly hit the ground running under the new manager but their attacking influence could have been telling.

The Hammers can be pleased with the defensive showing on the day with Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman combining well at the back.

It wasn’t a thrilling game against the Bees but one for Lopetegui to potentially reset and find his best side at the London Stadium.
