Mike Dean reacts to West Ham United controversy v Crystal Palace

Mike Dean admits it was a straightforward decision to send Konstantinos Mavropanos off as West Ham lost against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Greek giant was sent off in the 2-0 defeat at the London Stadium on 18 January, picking up two yellow cards on a dismal afternoon for Graham Potter.

Mavropanos was bullied by Jean-Philippe Mateta throughout, and a stray boot to his head was enough to pick up a second caution and his marching orders.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Soccer (18 January, 16:38) Dean immediately reacted to the incident with zero complaints.

“Pretty straightforward,” he said.

“He’s pulled him back and as he’s gone to clear the ball, he’s just kicked him in the side of the head so it’s a straightforward second yellow card.”

West Ham shocking v Crystal Palace

Potter will be scratching his head after watching another drab performance.

The Irons weren’t amazing in their 3-2 win against Fulham in midweek, but this was another level of effort that is simply not acceptable.

Tim Steidten was given the freedom to spend big money on the defence over the summer at the London Stadium, but it was been nothing short of a disaster.

Mavropanos was already there, but Max Kilman or Jean-Clair Todibo have not helped him one little bit.

Steidten needs to be fearing for his job now and could follow Julen Lopetegui out of the back door if David Sullivan makes that decision shortly.

Potter is fighting injuries and can be excused for now, but with games against Aston Villa and Chelsea coming up next, it doesn’t get any easier for him.

The pressure is rising now and anything put positive results in the next month will be the difference between happiness or another revolt at the London Stadium.
