Mark Lawrenson reacts to VAR controversy in West Ham defeat v Manchester United
Manchester United’s goal should not have been allowed as they won late against West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday, according to Mark Lawrenson.
Marcus Rashford scored the 90th-minute winner for the hosts but Edinson Cavani looked as though he could have been offside before the England international scored past Alphonse Areola.
Liverpool legend Lawrenson feels there will be a lot of debate about the incident, which saw VAR decide that Aaron Cresswell was playing Cresswell onside.
“He looked offside Edinson Cavani – really seriously did. There will be a row about this, I bet,” said Lawrenson, as quoted on the BBC Sport website at full-time.
“The number of strange decisions from VAR we have seen, you never, ever know.”

Controversial
If that was our goal and it was ruled out for offside, we would have been furious.
Last season, we saw matches ruined by VAR chalking off goals because players had a toenail offside or their armpit hair was just past the last defender.
It was ridiculous.
However, VAR seems to be more lenient now and don’t put offside shouts under the microscope anywhere near as much.
Look at the image above, Cavani is probably in line with Cresswell.
You could get the lines out and have a closer look but was it a clear and obvious error by the linesman? We don’t think it was.
We’ve just got to take this one on the chin and move on.
It was a gutting way to lose the game, especially as it happened so late and we’d played so well.
West Ham will get back to winning ways soon, we’re sure.
