Lucy Ward stunned by Pablo Fornals during West Ham clash vs Frankfurt

BT Sport commentator Lucy Ward was stunned by Pablo Fornals’ defending as Frankfurt scored inside a minute of their clash with West Ham.

The Hammers found themselves 1-0 down after just 50 seconds when Ansgar Knauff headed in at the London Stadium during the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

But Ward, who was on co-commentary duty for the game, picked out Spaniard Fornals for his role in the goal as he was ‘napping’ at the back post to allow Knauff to head home.

“Everybody in this stadium is stunned,” she said.

“Knauff it was in the end. It’s good play down the left hand side, we know how good they are with their deliveries into the box.

“Just caught napping, Fornals just let him drift out of his sight line.”

It was the worst possible way to start a European semi-final and Fornals has to do better if he’s going to play out wide rather than centrally.

He’s earned the left wing role with Lanzini playing centrally to allow him to help out more in midfield, but that means he must be more disciplined in his tracking back – especially against a side as strong as Frankfurt.

It was very early on but he just started ball watching on the edge of the box and allowed Knauff to get past him and ultimately it cost them big time.

Thankfully there are no away goals anymore so Michail Antonio’s equaliser later in the half lessened the damage, but the Hammers can’t rely on that every time.

The defending must be at it’s absolute best for the rest of the season if they’re to be successful and that includes the guys defending from the front.
