Lucas Paqueta ‘foolish’ as pundit rages over West Ham star v Crystal Palace

Rob Green slammed West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta for a “foolish” challenge in the first half of their encounter with Crystal Palace.

Paqueta has been highlighted for his lack of discipline and it was no different for the Brazilian in the Hammers’ clash with Palace which ended in a 2-0 defeat.

After a poor showing against Fulham, a home tie against Crystal Palace was seen as a potential chance for redemption but after just 17 minutes, Green wasted no time in labelling a foul on Marc Guehi as “foolish” with the Palace defender posing no threat.

Commentating via the USA Network feed [18 January], Green said: “Foolish from Paqueta, just needless.

“Unnecessary pressure really, Guehi is going nowhere.”

Lucas Paqueta needs to work on discipline at West Ham

There are little to no doubts to be had over the level of quality possessed by Paqueta but the main doubts emerge as a result of his disciplinary issues.

Throughout the course of the season, the Brazillian has been involved in needless altercations and moments of controversy and while the “foolish” moment against Crystal Palace came to nothing, it could have proven costly.

When singled out, they don’t seem overly concerning but they can quickly mount up and prove detrimental to not only a game but a season in the long run.

If Paqueta can iron these little stains out of his game, he will start to receive the level of recognition he deserves for his ability and move away from the growing reputation he has.

However, until then, he will often be seen as a liability and teams will target that, knowing he can be easily wound up and aggravated.
