Jamie Redknapp shares West Ham United relegation verdict amid 1-0 win v Southampton

Jamie Redknapp was furious with West Ham for their poor season so far and admitted he believes they are “too good to go down” while live on Sky Sports.

The Hammers entered Sunday’s clash with Southampton in the relegation zone, although they have two games in hand on most of the teams around them, and claimed a 1-0 win to move up to 14th in the table.

But speaking before the game while live on Sky Sports (2 April), Redknapp admitted that the team has “massively underachieved” this season and shouldn’t be anywhere near the relegation zone with the quality they have in the team.

“I’m going to say it, they’re too good to go down,” he said.

“They’re too good, look at that eleven they’ve got out there today. They’ve got Antonio to come on off the bench if you need him.

“They shouldn’t be in this position. They’ve massively underachieved. I know they’ve had Europe and they had a great season last year, but this is the sort of game they’ve got to win today.

“Jarrod Bowen on one side, Benrahma, they’ve got good players, Declan Rice in midfield.

“They shouldn’t be in this position with the quality they have.”

Complacent

This West Ham team have shown they have quality by reaching the Europa League semi-finals last year and then adding almost £200m worth of talent to the squad.

The problem is simply complacency from a lot of players who have the same thought process as Jamie Redknapp.

No team is too good to go down because if you don’t get the points on the board you deserve what you get – the league table never lies.

So this attitude needs to be taken out of them and each and every single individual needs to realise that they are very much in this fight and they need to wake up and smell the coffee to get out of it.

The result against Southampton on Sunday was an excellent start to doing just that, but there is still a long way to go and one result isn’t going to be enough.
