Jamie Redknapp loses mind over ‘ferocious’ moment in West Ham United defeat v Liverpool
Jamie Redknapp lost his mind over how good Dominik Szoboszlai’s goal against West Ham was on Wednesday night as Liverpool knocked David Moyes’ side out of the Carabao Cup.
Szoboszlai scored the first goal of Liverpool’s 5-1 demolition job of the Irons, who are heading back to the captial with their tails between their legs after a horrific performance at Anfield.
At half-time, Redknapp raved about Szoboszlai’s long-range goal but was criticial of how West Ham conceded possession beforehand as it looked as though they were about to launch a counterattack through Said Benrahama before he lost the ball.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event on Wednesday night (08:51pm, 20 December), Redknapp said: “It’s a thing of beauty. It’s a ferocious strike.
“West Ham are in a position to break quickly but they don’t do it right. Benrahma loses it, Quansah breaks it up and once it falls to Szoboszlai, there’s nothing else on his mind apart from getting that right foot on it.
“It’s such a beautiful strike of a ball; it’s a unique strike of a ball. This is like a modern way of moving it with no backlift.”
Awful defending
There’s no denying that Szoboszlai’s strike was a stunning one.
He absolutely lashed the ball from distance and it dipped perfectly into the bottom corner of Alphonse Areola’s goal.
But what on earth was happening in the build up?
Benrahma lost the ball so pathetically. He basically just ran into a dead end with little effort to keep possession alive for the Hammers.
Once the ball went to Szoboszlai, you could see he was lining up a shot but the defending from Ben Johnson was atrocious. You’ve never seen a player look less bothered about blocking a shot than he did in that instance.
It was ridiculously bad but that was the theme for the whole game.
Only Jarrod Bowen can have something positive said about him. Every other player and David Moyes himself should hang their heads in shame because the effort was abysmal.
Who can blame them though if the manager is waving the white flag before kick-off with his team seleciton?
