Ian Wright gushes over what ‘brilliant’ West Ham star did v Aston Villa

Ian Wright was a huge fan of Crysencio Summerville’s defensive work as West Ham lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Friday.

The 23-year-old winger put on an action-packed performance in the first half at Villa Park on 10 January, setting up Lucas Paqueta’s opening goal before being replaced by Vladimir Coufal at half-time.

Summerville appeared to be holding his hamstring during the first 45 minutes, and with Niclas Fullkrug also suffering an injury setback against the Villans, the Hammers clearly took a hit as they conceded twice in the second half.

Speaking live via ITV1 [10 January, 8:57pm], Wright said: “He’s been very, very good on that side. We know what he’s capable of attacking-wise, but some of his defensive work has been brilliant.

“It’s great closing down from him, brilliant,” to which Roy Keane replied: “He’s getting back and doing his job.”

Crysencio Summerville has starring role in West Ham win v Aston Villa

While Summerville was only on the pitch for 45 minutes, he played an incredibly telling role for the Hammers before being replaced by Coufal at the half-time break.

The former Leeds United man has been an exciting addition to the squad since his £25million last summer [BBC Sport], albeit only notching one goal and one assist in the Premier League so far.

Last season, he was one of the players of the Championship, scoring 19 goals and supplying nine assists, which always poses the question as to why he was not utilised by Julen Lopetegui.

With only seven league starts to his name, there is no doubt that Summerville has a bigger role to play this season, and with Graham Potter now in charge, he might be given that opportunity finally.

The 23-year-old’s performances often rely on the trust put in him by his manager and Potter certainly looks like the head coach to give him that confidence to let him thrive in East London.
