Ian Wright baffled live on air by Aston Villa v West Ham controversial footage

Ian Wright could not believe Tim Robinson awarded a corner kick before Amadou Onana’s equaliser for Aston Villa against West Ham on Friday.

The former Everton midfielder took a wild swipe at goal, seeing his shot go soaring out of play for what should have been a goal kick, only for the referee to award a corner at Villa Park on 10 January.

While the Hammers should have been ready to defend, Graham Potter’s side will certainly feel cheated as the culprit took advantage of the situation, squeezing the resulting phase of play past Lukasz Fabianski.

Speaking live via ITV1 [10 January, 10:06pm], Wright said: “The referee and the assistant messing up totally with that corner… I can’t believe it because the referee is right there, he’s standing right there.

“It’s gone through a gap and no one’s near it! How can you get that one wrong? West Ham were in this, and yes they had to defend more because Villa got on top, and they try [to defend it].”

Aston Villa v West Ham controversy ruins FA Cup tie

Unai Emery’s side were certainly on top when Onana scored the equaliser, but the Hammers will feel they had total control up until that moment, but certainly not after.

With Morgan Rogers scoring the winner just five minutes later, this one individual error looks to have flipped the game completely on its head, resulting in Potter’s first loss and the club being knocked out of the FA Cup.

The Irons definitely should have taken more of their chances throughout the game, but with Potter’s side largely the better team for the best part of an hour, it is a difficult one to take.

In addition to that, striker Niclas Fullkrug and Crysencio Summerville were replaced due to injury, the former’s seeming far more serious than the latter’s.

Konstantinos Mavropanos was also forced off with an injury, adding yet another blow to Potter’s first few days in charge at the London Stadium, so it could be an interesting January transfer window.
