Gary Neville ‘cannot believe’ what West Ham United did to Phil Foden in loss v Manchester City

Gary Neville could not believe what the West Ham United backline did to Phil Foden during the Hammers’ Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

The Hammers ended their season and David Moyes’ era in charge with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to the Premier League champions on Sunday (19 May) despite Mohammed Kudus’ excellent first-half overhead kick.

Moyes’ side fell behind after only a matter of minutes and struggled to contain the Champions’ attack for much of the game, but Neville couldn’t believe how much space the Irons afforded Foden.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (19 May, 17:42) he said: “You cannot believe that with all the players that West Ham have around the ball, that they allow Phil Foden the space in between four of them.

“It eventually falls to De Bryune.”

When will West Ham United announce Julen Lopetegui after Manchester City loss?

Sunday’s defeat perhaps showed why West Ham supporters are so keen to see a change in the dugout. While there is no shame in losing to Manchester City, the Irons were far too passive and defensive at the Etihad.

Foden was allowed to roam free for much of the first half without anywhere near enough pressure from the backline or midfield, something which has become all too common under Moyes in recent weeks.

West Ham United manager David Moyes
David Moyes will be remembered fondly by West Ham supporters.

The Scotsman deserves credit for the work he has done previously at the London Stadium, but the time has come for a change. Whether or not Julen Lopetegui will hit the ground running remains to be seen, but that gamble need to be taken.

Hopefully, the Irons will hit the ground running next term and bounce back from what has been a bit of underwhelming campaign. No matter what, the pressure will be on from the first whistle next term.
