Edson Alvarez torn apart as ‘liability’ after what he did in West Ham United v Nottingham Forest

Tom Rennie did not hold back after Edson Alvarez was given his marching orders as West Ham lost 3-0 to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Mexican midfielder was cautioned for a shirt pull on Murillo before hacking down Anthony Elanga to earn himself a second yellow card just before the half-time whistle was blown.

With Chris Wood taking the lead at The City Ground on Saturday 2 November, Julen Lopetegui will have been pulling his hair out as the Hammers went down to 10 men.

Taking to X on Saturday (2 November), talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie wrote: “This guy is an idiot. Just kicks people constantly. A total liability.

“Unprofessional to get sent off. On a yellow card to do that tackle? Seriously?”

Edson Alvarez lets West Ham United down after Nottingham Forest antics

Lopetegui will be absolutely fuming, not just with the red card, but also with the midfielder throwing away any chance of the Hammers building on their 2-1 win over Manchester United last weekend.

It is hardly a surprise to see Alvarez’s lack of discipline on the pitch, having picked up 11 yellow cards in the league last season, and even getting hot-headed during the last international break.

The midfield duo is clearly an issue for the new manager, with Guido Rodriguez also picking up a caution in the first half and needing to be substituted during the break.

However, other than the aforementioned duo, there are few players in the squad who can deputise just ahead of the backline, though anyone is likely to be more sensible than Alvarez.

The Hammers eventually went on to lose 3-0 at The City Ground, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ola Aina getting in on the goalscoring action.

Lopetegui will certainly be back under immense pressure, especially due to some of his changes during the game, and he should be having words with his midfielder once the team get back to the London Stadium.
