David Moyes was ‘Furious’ with Said Benrahma at the end of West Ham draw at Brighton
Said Benrahma rescued a point for West Ham in their 1-1 draw at Brighton on Saturday night but that didn’t escape him from the wrath of David Moyes, according to talkSPORT pundit Alex Crook.
The Algerian winger, 25, was benched for the trip to the Amex Stadium after failing to provide any of his magic in last weekend’s defeat to Everton.
But he replaced Jarrod Bowen in the second half against Brighton and didn’t take long to show his class, scoring a brilliant long-range goal to draw level with the hosts and offer some inspiration to the Irons as they went in search of a winner to reignite their Champions League hopes.
However his equaliser proved to be the last goal of the game and it means West Ham are five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with just two games remaining.
It was a sumptuous finish by Benrahma but he then failed with an attempted cross in the dying embers of the game, much to the frustration of the incredulous Moyes.
Commentating on talkSPORT’s ‘GameDay Exclusive’ programme [15/05/21] during live coverage of the clash, Crook detailed the Scot’s disdain at the pass by Benrahma to Vladimir Coufal, which ended up in the arms of Brighton goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez.
“David Moyes is absolutely furious with that delivery,” he said.
Heat of the moment
It was a disappointing ball by Benrahma at such a critical period with so few seconds remaining on the clock.
We would expect better quality from someone as supremely talented as him but that magic evaded him for that split second.
However we can’t forget his influence from the bench to help drag us back into the game after Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton.
Benrahma’s sweetly struck shot from distance earned us a point and gave us the chance of scoring a winner.
Unfortunately that never arrived and coming so close was surely the reason for Moyes’ anger with Benrahma at the end.
Moyes has created an Irons side that has become accustomed to winning and not doing so as regularly in recent weeks has made him a bit more spiky on the sidelines.
We can forgive him for showing a bit of emotion when Benrahma failed to create a chance to secure victory for us.
Whether he takes that anger into the dressing room, who knows.
Moyes hasn’t appeared to be Benrahma’s biggest fan with minimal starting opportunities for the Algerian since he signed from Brentford last year, but surely his goal against Brighton will see him come into contention for a start at West Brom on Wednesday.
