Casey Stoney and Carlton Cole believe Man United deserved penalty v West Ham

Manchester United should have been handed a penalty against West Ham last night, claim Sky Sports duo Casey Stoney and Carlton Cole.

Hammers midfielder Mark Noble appeared to have pulled Jesse Lingard to the floor inside the box in the first half of the game which led to the Man United players appealing for a penalty.

However, referee Jon Moss was unmoved by their protests and with no VAR in action, there was nobody to override his decision.

Discussing the incident at the end of the game on Sky Sports, Stoney said, “I believe it’s a penalty. Anywhere else on the pitch and it’s a foul.”

Cole, a former West Ham player, mirrored her view on the situation but was delighted that there was no VAR as it benefitted them.

He said, “Of course (it’s a penalty). I’m quite fair. It’s good the VAR’s not here. On a normal day, it’s a free kick if it is outside the box.”

Lucky relief

There were a few contentious decisions that went against Man United when the two sides squared off on Sunday and the same thing happened on Wednesday night as well.

To the naked eye, it looked like there was enough contact for Lingard to go down and for Moss to point to the spot.

Looking at it once again, it seems hard to argue against it being a penalty for the hosts, but the Hammers will take whatever comes their way.

Overall, it was a good performance from the visitors despite them attempting only a third of the shots as their opponents did on the night.

They were clinical on the night and held their nerve when it mattered the most so David Moyes is likely to be pleased with his side’s performance.

West Ham now have the small matter of dealing with Manchester City in the next round but will be relieved that it’s at the London Stadium and they can count on the fans to offer that extra boost.
