Antonio astonishes Sky Sports man in ‘incredible’ Newcastle v West Ham moment

Michail Antonio was hailed for his “astonishing” work rate by Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe after an “incredible” tackle as West Ham defeated Newcastle United on Monday.

The Jamaica striker raced back to make a sliding challenge on Sean Longstaff near the centre circle at St James’ Park in a brilliant display of commitment to the cause.

It did not go unnoticed by Hinchcliffe, who hailed the 34-year-old for putting in the hard yards for his team during the 2-0 win (25 November).

“Joelinton’s the wrong side, but Antonio astonishing work rate, the sliding challenge, he’s actually tackled with his wrong foot here, normally go with the left he’s gone with the right foot and he times it to perfection,” he said live on Sky Sports Football (25 November).

“He’s up and at them, Joelinton comes across him and does foul him. Incredible work by the striker.”

Michail Antonio shows commitment to the West Ham cause

Antonio has probably ended up getting way more minutes than he would have expected this season after the Hammers forked out big money to sign Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window.

But the persistent injury issue the Germany international has faced has meant that the veteran Jamaica international has had to feature more regularly than most would have expected.

While you can obviously question the diminishing goals return from a player in the twilight of his career, one thing you can never question is his commitment to the cause and this wonderful moment typified how much Antonio cares.

It was a real lung-busting run to make up ground and put in a full-blooded challenge, the type of which the Hammers will need more of if they are to climb the Premier League table.

It truly was an astonishing moment from a great servant to the Irons.
