Andy Townsend blown away by Michail Antonio v Leicester City
Michail Antonio’s performance impressed Andy Townsend as West Ham ran out 4-1 winners over Leicester City on Monday night.
While the Hammers striker scored two goals, him setting up Said Benrahma for their second goal is what impressed Townsend the most.
The former Chelsea midfielder, who was on co-commentary for the game on Premier League productions’ world feed, waxed lyrical of the 31-year-old for the rest of the contest.
Describing Benrahma’s goal in the 57th minute, the talkSPORT pundit said, “What an important goal, but let’s appreciate Antonio for a brilliant bit of work in order to get the ball to Benrahma.
“He chased the ball the down, lifted his head up and then played the perfect pass to Benrahma.”
Antonio will surely be remembered for his two goals that saw him break the all-time Premier League goal scoring record for the Hammers.
However, it’s nice to see Townsend appreciating one of the underrated aspects of the game which is chasing the opposition down and regaining possession higher up the pitch.
Due to him playing in so many different positions, he’s well accustomed to that part of the game and it was almost like a winger setting up a striker for that goal.
There have been talks of us signing a new striker this summer and even if we do, he’s unlikely to replace Antonio whenever he’s fit.
The 31-year-old has started the season so strongly and we hope that he remains injury-free for the longest part as we’ve got a talent on our hands waiting to score goals whenever he gets the chance.
