Alan Shearer and Ian Wright shocked at Victor Lindelof controversy in West Ham United v Manchester United clash
Alan Shearer and Ian Wright could not believe their eyes when West Ham were denied a penalty v Manchester United in the first half.
The Hammers won the game 1-0 at the London Stadium on Sunday, 7 May at the London Stadium but they felt they deserved a chance to double their lead.
The ball clearly touched Victor Lindelof’s extended arm in the penalty area but he was not called up for it by the on-field referee or VAR.

Speaking at half-time on the Premier League world feed, Shearer said at 19:56 on 7 May, “It’s a terrible position for him to be in. It’s got to be a handball. The lawmakers have tied themselves up to protect this law. It’s a complete mess. They try to complicate it and it’s a complete mess.”
To which Wright responded, “I would like to know why that’s not a penalty. It’s as clear as day.”
Shocking standards
One would think that the best league in the world would have the money and competence standard to have the best referees, but unfortunately not.
The decision did not cost West Ham the game, otherwise, David Moyes would’ve been up in arms about one of the most shocking calls of the season.
Referees have the power to cost teams their spot in the Premier League for a few mad decisions and it’s terrible and should not be allowed to happen.

However, controversy aside, this was an incredible way to start what is a huge week for the Hammers as they look to win a European trophy.
The Hammers host AZ Alkmaar at the London Stadium on Thursday, 11 May and a good lead will give them the confidence to secure their spot in the final.
Declan Rice was excellent once again and fans will be hoping for a repeat performance from him in the Conference League.
