Aaron Wan-Bissaka ‘exceptional’ as West Ham United man wows in win v Crystal Palace
West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has left Tom Rennie in awe with an “exceptional” moment in the win over Crystal Palace.
Julen Lopetegui picked up his first three points as the Hammers boss with an excellent 2-0 win over Palace on Saturday (24 August) thanks to second-half strikes from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen.
While both goal scorers stole the majority of the plaudits for their finishes, talkSPORT broadcaster Rennie was blown away by Wan-Bissaka’s work in the build-up to set up Soucek’s opening strike.
Writing on X on Saturday (24 August) he said: “Wan-Bissaka that was exceptional.”
How much did West Ham pay Manchester United for Aaron Wan-Bissaka transfer?
The Hammers have backed Lopetegui and Tim Steidten heavily this summer and while they run the risk of making too many changes too quickly, their new signings have impressed when given their chances so far.
Wan-Bissaka certainly wasn’t signed for his attacking output The defender is widely known to be much better out of possession than he is with the ball at his feet, but he showed he’s no slouch when attacking.
He may not have actually picked up the assist for Soucek’s goal, but his run from deep inside the Hammers’ own half which saw him burst into the final third showed an element of impetus that West Ham have occasionally lacked.
Whether or not that alone would have been enough for the Englishman to knock Vladimir Coufal off of his perch and earn a place as a regular starter remains to be seen, but it will have given Lopetegui plenty of food for thought.
It will be interesting to see who starts against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup next time out.
