Aaron Wan-Bissaka baffles with what he did for West Ham United in clash v Tottenham

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has left Ally McCoist baffled with a moment in the showdown between West Ham United and Tottenham.

The Hammers returned from the international break with a disappointing 4-1 defeat in North London on Saturday (19 October) with Mohammed Kudus’ first-half goal proving to be little more than a consolation.

While Wan-Bissaka did a reasonable job of keeping Son Heung-min quiet for the most part, talkSPORT pundit McCoist was left confused when the Hammers defender left the attacker unmarked late in the first half.

Speaking on TNT Sports on Saturday (19 October, 13:16) he said: “I don’t know what Wan-Bissaka is doing.

“I know he nudges the man in front of him but he forgets about the man at the back.”

What has happened to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at West Ham United and the London Stadium?

It was never going to be an easy afternoon for Wan-Bissaka as he attempted to keep one of the Premier League’s best-attacking players quiet, but he stood up and faced the challenge head-on in North London.

While he was guilty of being sent for a hotdog on a few occasions by some impressive body feints and was nowhere to be seen for Spurs’ third goal, the former Manchester United man worked incredibly hard to try and keep the Tottenham captain away from the Hammers’ goal.

These sorts of games are exactly the sort of contests that Wan-Bisska was signed for. There are few better fullbacks in the division when it comes to defending one-on-one and in parts that was clear to see on Saturday afternoon.

West Ham backtrack on Wan-Bissaka?

Of course, the Irons do occasionally miss the attacking threat that Vladimir Coufal can offer down the right flank. The Czech international will still have a major role to play in claret and blue between now and the end of the season.

For now, however, it appears as though the right-back shirt is Wan-Bissaka’s to lose at the London Stadium.
