Why Finlay Herrick has proven he'll be future West Ham star despite Fulham struggles

West Ham United goalkeeper Finlay Herrick is mature beyond his tender age.

The 20-year-old announced himself to the Hammers faithful in the FA Cup quarter-final last season.

He replaced the injured Alphonse Areola in the final minute of extra-time for his Irons debut ahead of a penalty shootout with Leeds United.

Leeds won that shootout, but not before Herrick denied Joel Piroe with the Whites' first penalty, instantly writing himself a cult hero moment.

So far in 2026-27, he's made two appearances, both in the Carabao Cup as he tries to win the back-up role under Nuno Espirito Santo.

And whilst he endured a tough night at the office against Fulham on Tuesday, his reflections after the game show why he's destined for stardom.

Whenever a young player takes accountability and speaks with maturity, it's always impressive to see.

Being a goalkeeper, especially a young one trying to forge a career at a club like West Ham, pressure and expectation is a given.

Herrick understands that, and in a refreshing interview with West Ham TV via the club website, he knows he's far from the finished article.

“I have to look back on the third goal and be harsh on myself. I think maybe I should do better and help out the team," he admitted.

“I'd like to think, under Rui Barbosa and Bill Lepine, I've progressed a lot over the last 12 months since when they came in but I've still got a lot more to do.

“As you can see tonight, I still have things I need to work on but I'm sure the more experience I get, the more training I do with them, the better I'll get."

Criticism is bound to come a goalkeeper's way whenever three goals are conceded in a match.

And by Herrick's own admission, he recognises that he could and probably should've done better with the third goal in particular.

However, it's worth remembering this is a player who was on loan with National League side Boreham Wood last season.

As per FotMob, Herrick still made three saves against the Cottagers, all three of which came from efforts inside the Hammers' box.

He was accurate with 20 of his 29 pass attempts, made six recoveries and played five accurate long balls too.

So yes, it was a challenging night for Herrick, but it should also prove to be a valuable learning experience.

Couple that with his hugely impressive attitude and self-awareness, and this is a young goalkeeper who can and will go very far.
