Dan Bardell has suggested that West Ham would not sell Edson Alvarez to Manchester United this summer just one season after signing.

There has been contact with the Hammers to gather information but there is no bid on the table and no personal terms have been agreed yet.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes a deal may be tough to agree on after he moved to the London Stadium just one year ago.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Bardell said: "He did ok for a first season, he maybe lost his way towards the end of the season but so did West Ham a little bit.

"He is a good player and has pedigree, he's played in the Champions League but Manchester United may be a step up too far.

"I don't see West Ham letting him go after spending so much on him last summer. United probably won't pay more than West Ham paid so I don't really see any gain from selling him.

"That is a deal that doesn't really help either club."

The Mexican international has an up-and-down campaign but is only going to get better with more Premier League experience.

His discipline record became a problem as the season went on and that is something he must work on moving forward.

With that being said, for Julen Lopetegui he could prove to be a useful option at the base of midfield due to his versatility.

When moving forward, the 26-year-old can drop into the back line to form a back three to give protection against counterattacks.

Manchester United have been known in recent years to splash out on signings such as Antony and Casemiro.

They may look to do similarly this summer with the Hammers set to demand a large fee for Alvarez this summer if they want him.

He would be a loss to the squad but the money that he brings in would certainly be useful for Lopetegui to add to his squad this summer.
