West Ham are now in advanced talks with Manchester City over a loan move for Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder agreed to a switch, according to talkSPORT.

The British broadcaster shared an update on Phillips' future live on air on Tuesday [23 January, 07:20], with a deal now edging closer to completion.

West Ham are one of a number of clubs to have been linked with the England international this month, along with the likes of Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Newcastle United and Juventus.

Pep Guardiola hailed Phillips for his "incredible contributions" not so long ago, but the 28-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game this season.

Midfield maestro

This would be a superb piece of transfer business from West Ham if they can get it over the line, which is looking increasingly likely to be the case.

There has been suggestions of a £7million loan fee being paid, which is obviously not so great, but the longer-term picture must also be factored in.

You would expect an arrangement to also be in place with City over a permanent deal in the summer if this loan move works out. If that is the case, this £7m would effectively go towards that.

Phillips is a £45m player, and if United can get him for around £10m under that figure, it would be a good move.

The Hammers' midfield is already pretty well stocked, but it is about constantly improving and that is what they are doing. Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Phillips can form one of the finest midfield triumvirates around.

The deal has not been officially announced yet, but that is surely now the next development in this saga.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers could get a separate £21m deal over the line after Phillips has arrived.
