West Ham United to complete Conor Coventry sale on Friday morning after Sheffield Wednesday twist
West Ham are set to complete the sale of Conor Coventry to Charlton Athletic on Friday morning after a transfer twist involving Sheffield Wednesday, according to Richard Cawley.
The South London Press sports editor posted on X (11 January) to report that the League One Addicks had won the race for the 23-year-old central midfielder.
Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller had shared on (11 January) that Wednesday's bid to bring Coventry to Hillsborough was on "life support" according to one source.
And now Charlton appear the overwhelming favourites to sign Coventry, who was reportedly having a medical with the club on Friday (Natasha Everitt).
According to the Irish Independent (11 January), Charlton will pay a fee in the region of £1million for Coventry.
Right time to go
It is absolutely the time for Coventry to be departing the London Stadium because he is 23 now, so no longer really a kid waiting for a chance to break into the first team he is at an age where he has be playing regular senior football.
For a time, it looked as though he would be heading to the Championship to try and aid the Owls' fight to stay in the division but it became apparent on Friday that Wednesday were likely to miss out on his signature.
Instead, Coventry will remain rooted in London and ply his trade for Charlton, who had already boosted their midfield this month with the loan signing of Tyreeq Bakinson - coincidentally from Wednesday.
It really is now a matter of time before this one gets signed off, it's not a question of if anymore but when. It frees up a little bit of space for the Hammers although it is unlikely to affect the balance sheets too much.
