West Ham United: Jose Mourinho tipped to take over from David Moyes at the London Stadium
Frank McAvennie has tipped Jose Mourinho to take over from David Moyes when the current West Ham boss leaves his role upon the expiry of his contract amid plenty of pressure.
That pressure has started to mount again after the 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen left fans frustrated with the style of play, which McAvennie insists would improve under Mourinho's guidance.
The former Hammers man claimed Moyes could be set to walk away as he is still yet to sign a new deal at the London Stadium despite the contract reportedly being tabled.
McAvennie - speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone - joked that Mourinho had a "disaster" at Manchester United despite winning the Europa League and League Cup.
"I don't know if he wants to stay, to be honest with you. Why would you not have signed the contract by now if you wanted to stay? I don't know," McAvennie insisted.
"Potter has been mentioned, Mourinho has been mentioned, they've all been mentioned. I'm a big fan of Mourinho, I don't care what anybody says, that guy knows how to win trophies and tournaments.
"He wasn't good enough for Manchester United - just won a Europa League, a League Cup and finished second in the league, but that was a disaster. Imagine having that on your CV.
"I don't know. I would love to see somebody like him coming in. People criticise Mourinho for his negativity, a bit like David, but if Mourinho had this team he wouldn't be negative. He'd sort the defence out, that's for sure."
Could Jose Mourinho take over from David Moyes at West Ham?
Mourinho had previously been linked with a move to the London Stadium after leaving Roma - where he won yet another Europa League trophy - earlier this season, while pressure continues to grow on Moyes' position.
Jamie Carragher recently insisted Moyes could decide to leave the club to protect his own reputation if he can guide the Hammers to a strong Europa League finish and finish seventh or eighth in the Premier League.
Carragher’s comments came shortly after Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth insisted that Moyes will make the final decision about whether he stays or leaves in the summer, as he suggested that a Europa League challenge could push him to stay.
The main issue with Moyes is the style of play and it's hard to imagine Mourinho's style would be any more exciting for the Hammers fans beyond having a legendary boss in charge, but McAvennie insisted he would get the best out of the players.
