Teddy Sheringham tells Tottenham to keep Harry Kane happy with West Ham United star Declan Rice
Tottenham have been told to buy West Ham star Declan Rice to keep forwards Harry Kane and Son Heung-min happy by Teddy Sheringham.
After months of transfer speculation linking the Irons midfielder to Premier League giants such as Chelsea and Manchester United it appears he is likely to stay for another year.
The 23-year-old turned down an eight-year contract offer from the club and is thought to want to play Champions League football above money (Sun), and Spurs are in pole position to claim the final qualification place for the competition on Sunday (22 May).
Sheringham told Sun Sport: "West Ham supporters wouldn't like it but Declan Rice would be ideal for Tottenham.
"Tottenham have got to go to the next level to keep players like Son and Kane happy. You can't be signing average players.
"If you want to go to the next level as a football club you've got to be signing the likes of Declan Rice.
"I think he's awesome. I think he's the best midfield player in the world at the moment. He's up there with the best players in the world.
"I think he can do everything; he can pass the ball, he can win the ball, he can run with the ball - as a midfield player he has everything to be sensational.
"He has already been sensational in his career and I think he can go on to be even better."
Hands off
Sheringham may have been a Hammer for a fruitful late-career stretch that encompassed 30 goals in less than 90 games, but he spent seven years at White Hart Lane across two spells so clearly has more loyalty to them.
Irons fans won't be best pleased with the idea that he is touting Rice to another of his former sides but they shouldn't be too concerned.
If he doesn't leave for a team that has a history of winning trophies in the Premier League era then he surely won't be going to one that doesn't.
And that's if they could even afford him, as the likes of both Manchester sides appear to have been put off by the £150million price tag.
Tottenham have never displayed the spending power of either, or Chelsea, who have all broken the British transfer record in recent years.
Unless the Hammers can match the England star's ambitions the talk around him moving will go on continually, so this summer and next season will be crucial to his long-term future at the club.
