Simon Stone has revealed that West Ham could face AC Milan, Benfica or Feyenoord in the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

The BBC journalist tweeted on Wednesday (13 December) that the Hammers could be landed with a tie against one of those three sides in the playoff round if they lose against Freiburg on Thursday (14 December).

It comes after each of those teams finished third in their Champions League groups, meaning they have been forced to play in the Europa League after Christmas.

Take it seriously

There is no doubt that West Ham should be looking to take the game against Freiburg seriously despite already securing their place in the Europa League knockout rounds.

It is basically a showdown between the two sides for who will top the group and ensure they don't have to face one of the teams relegated down from the Champions League in the playoff round.

That could make a huge difference as a tie against the likes of AC Milan at such an early stage wouldn't be a game too many clubs would fancy, while the two extra matches wouldn't be welcome.

West Ham

This is a tricky period for David Moyes to manage as the performances in the Premier League are currently under the microscope and the cup competitions, with a Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool awaiting the Hammers next week, becoming increasingly important.

It's about striking that balance between remaining competitive on all fronts while ensuring the players are fit and ready for the hectic festive period.
