Paul Merson has shared his immediate reaction to David Moyes' departure from West Ham United, labelling the decision to let him go "madness".

The Hammers announced in a statement on Monday (6 May) that they would part company with the Scotsman at the end of the Premier League season having reached a mutual agreement.

While it appears that Irons will now appoint former Wolves and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui, Sky Sports pundit Merson insists that West Ham have made the wrong call, slamming fans who have complained about the style of football.

Writing for Sky Sports News (6 May) he said: "West Ham have got to be careful what they wish for. Moyes has pulled up trees there, won a European trophy. Solid seventh, eighth, ninth, top half of the table again.

"This manager is top, top drawer. They won a European trophy! It's just madness. I wouldn't have got rid of him in a month of Sundays. You'll get West Ham fans coming back, saying this and that, throwing every stat in the world.

"But I'll just throw you the biggest stat of them all. He. Won. You. A. Trophy. I don't care all about this entertaining football, we don't play that well, and we should be doing better with these players. They won a trophy!"

Will West Ham United appoint Julen Lopetegui after David Moyes' London Stadium exit?

Hammers fans must be so bored of being told to be careful what they wish for. As soon as they voice any frustration with anything at their club, pundits and fans alike are quick to tell them that it could be so much worse.

Yes, Moyes deserves plenty of credit for his previous work at the London Stadium, but that doesn't mean that he should be excused for the drab football this season and the terrible run of results so far this calendar year.

A change in the dugout was needed to freshen things up and while most fans were hoping for an appointment slightly more exciting than Lopetegui, the Spaniard has a track record of success across his career.

Hopefully, he will be appointed and prove all the doubters wrong sooner rather than later. At least then, pundits and rival fans can stop telling supporters what they should be thinking.
