Michail Antonio heads to new club as he trains with Championship under-performers

Michail Antonio could be about to finally join his first club since departing West Ham United in the summer.

Antonio was released by West Ham at the start of July, ending a 10-year spell in East London that saw him score a club-record 68 Premier League goals.

Prior to his exit, Antonio played in two Premier League 2 matches for West Ham’s Under-21s in order to maintain his fitness.

Antonio has also trained with Brentford, but was ultimately not offered a contract by the Premier League side.

However, it may well be that Antonio now drops down a division into the Championship amid an update provided on 12 December.

Michail Antonio training with Leicester City as talks held

Antonio has made clear he has no intention of retiring, despite a horrific car accident 12 months ago that could easily have taken his life.

And the Jamaica international is now in talks over a move to under-performing Championship side Leicester City.

As reported by The Telegraph's John Percy via X, Antonio is training with the Foxes as a free agent.

Antonio is said to have been at Leicester's training base on Thursday to hold talks, although nothing official is in place yet.

Antonio's last game for West Ham's senior side was last December, shortly before being involved in a car accident.

The 35-year-old has represented seven teams in his career - permanent or otherwise - with Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest the other notable clubs.

Antonio months away from losing prized West Ham honour

There is no doubt that Antonio is an all-time great at West Ham, and supporters will therefore wish him all the best if he does indeed join Leicester.

The Foxes seem like a good club for Antonio to join, given their aim is to return to the Premier League this season.

However, Leicester are currently down in 13th place in the Championship, albeit just three points off the playoff spots.

Antonio holds the record of being West Ham's record Premier League goalscorer, but Jarrod Bowen may take that away from him in a matter of months.

Bowen is now on 60 Premier League goals, which is just eight behind Antonio's tally of 68. Realistically, Bowen will be looking to chase that down this season.

That will not lessen supporters' love for Antonio, of course, and everyone will now wish him all the best as he looks to get his career back on track.
