Lee Hendrie couldn't quite believe what he saw as West Ham United drew with Queens Park Rangers on Friday.

The London Stadium clash opened as a cagey affair as the R's looked to play on the counter.

While off the ball, there was little space for the hosts do anything moving forward.

That saw Taty Castellanos take his first two touches as kick-offs.

It was all due to the major controversy in E20 that the Argentine even got a chance for the second.

The game went on to finish 1-1, with Jarrod Bowen cancelling out Nicolas Madsen's penalty before missing one of his own, but there was drama aplenty.

What did Lee Hendrie say about West Ham vs QPR penalty controversy?

The London Stadium couldn't quite believe their eyes on the 16 minute mark.

Tomas Soucek lost possession to Paul Smyth and went on to win possession back from the forward with a perfectly timed slide tackle.

That is what everyone in E20 thought - but not referee Ruebyn Ricardo.

The official blew his whistle and signalled for a penalty as Soucek was left baffled.

He wasn't the only one as former midfielder Hendrie went on a massive rant live on Sky Sports.

The co-commentator for the night at the London Stadium said: "I nearly said what a great challenge it was from Soucek.

"It's Smyth that drives in - oh my word. It's definitely not a penalty. Just what I thought originally.

"This is an absolute howler, it really is. The follow-through is not even dangerous. He gets enough of the ball. Oh no, it's terrible. Definitely not a penalty for me.

"West Ham are absolutely furious. Quite clearly, there's a big touch from Soucek. Not a penalty for me. No way on this earth."

Hendrie doubled down by labelling the decision "crazy" in later replays.

There is no other ways to truly describe the moment as it took everyone on both sides by total surprise.

It has raised a question of why VAR can prove to be so important.

Do West Ham want VAR now?

There was an obvious disappointment when the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League.

Many fans did their most to find the positive, and playing in a league without VAR was seen as one of those.

That is the case until a decision like this goes against you.

As former QPR forward Bradley Allen asked on BBC Radio London: "Thousands of West Ham fans - do you want VAR now?"

The general feeling will probably still be that they are happy without it, but it certainly has caused frustration in East London.

This wouldn't have happened if there had been the video assistant referee involved, so it will open plenty of interesting conversations.
